About

The Take a Hike for Humanity event was founded by Ron Dyer in 1996 as his project for the Self Expression and Leadership Program he was taking at Landmark Education. From the beginning, the focus of this fundraiser has been raising funds to support local affiliates of Habitat for Humanity.  From a humble beginning of 12 hikers the first year, the event continues to grow to include multiple sites and a few hundred hikers each year.  Hikers come out to support their local Habitat for Humanity affiliate based in New Hampshire or Massachusetts.

In 2004, the Clarence Jordan “Pioneers in Excellence” Award was presented for the 2003 event to recognize the high level of partnership amongst local Habitat for Humanity affiliates participating in the event.  The Clarence Jordan award is given by Habitat for Humanity International and honors Habitat for Humanity affiliates that demonstrate creativity and innovation.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit ecumenical Christian housing ministry.  Its goal is to eliminate poverty housing from the world by providing simple, decent places to live.  Habitat houses are not given away.  Partner families must provide sweat equity, often by working on their own house.  No-interest mortgages setup to keep the housing affordable while building a fund to finance future Habitat houses.
