FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
- When is the event?
The hike is being held at two locations this year on two separate Saturdays. On Saturday, May 22, 2010, you can hike at Mt. Monadnock and on Saturday, June 5, 2010, you can hike at Blue Hills Reserve. - Why Habitat?
Habitat for Humanity aims to eliminate sub-standard housing around the world. Selected partner families work with Habitat to achieve their dream of home-ownership. The houses are not given away outright. Instead, home-owners must spend time volunteering to build their own house. A no-interest mortgage is created to repay the cost of building materials over time and fund future houses. By providing families with simple, decent affordable places to live, we are strengthening communities. For more information, see the Habitat for Humanity Internation Fact Sheet. - How do I sign up?
Go to takeahikeforhumanity.dojiggy.com (our online registration system). You can create a link to email to friends and family to ask them to donate. Cash and check pledges should be brought on the day of the event. - I don’t want to sign up online, can I register on the day of the event?
Yes, just show up. Bring any cash and check pledges collected. - Can I bring my pet?
No pets are allowed at Mt. Monadnock State Park. Dogs are allowed at Blue Hills Reservation. - Do I have to pay an entrance fee to enter the park?
For Blue Hills Reservation: There is no admission fee.
For Mt. Monadnock: Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for children ages 6-11; children ages 5 and under and NH residents age 65 and over are admitted free. This fee supports the New Hampshire state park system. - What is the minimum donation in order to hike?
There is no set minimum donation required to come out and hike. However, you will need to raise at least $125 to get an event T-shirt. - How old do I have to be to hike?
People of all ages can come out and hike. We do require that you sign a liability waiver form. Parents sign for children under 18. Children under 13 need to be accompanied by an adult. - Is there a rain date?
No. The event occurs rain or shine: May 22, 2010 at Mt. Monadnock and June 5, 2010 at Blue Hills Reservation. - When do I show up?
Before setting off on the hike, please check in with us at the registration table between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. - How long does it take to hike?
Hiking times will vary by ability and the size of the team. Typically, it takes about 3 hours to hike up and down Mt. Monadnock. At Blue Hills Reservation, the Houghton Pond loop is about 1 hour, but there are other trails available which may take 2 1/2 hours. - Can I form a team?
Yes! Hiking as part of a team makes the experience more enjoyable. - Does everyone on the team get event T-shirts?
As long as you raise at least $125/person, you can receive event T-shirts. - Is there a maximum team size?
There is no maximum team size. If you have more than 4-6 people, you may find that you get split up during the hike as not everyone hikes at the same speed. Mobile phone coverage can be spotty, so it is be a good idea to have a plan for meeting up later if you get split up. - What about communities in the rest of the world?
Local area Habitat for Humanity affiliates exist primarily to eliminate sub-standard housing from their community. However, affiliates send a portion, or tithe, of their donations received to Habitat for Humanity International to fund building projects throughout the world. - I missed the hike this year, can I come out next year?
Yes, this is an annual fundraiser to benefit New Hampshire and eastern Massachusetts Habitat for Humanity affiliates. The hike is typically either hosted at the end of May or beginning of June each year. Check back at the www.takeahikeforhumanity.org website for more information. Also, if you represent a Habitat for Humanity affiliate and would like to participate in the event, please email us at info@takeahikeforhumanity.org. - I have a question that’s not answered here.
